A week ago i had the chance to visit the infamous hyperisland, an unconventional school for creative talents in digital environment. We had a brief intro to hyper, a workshop on hypermethod, Q&A with current students, and finally paid a visit to their workplace.

The cool thing about hyperisland is their methodology, allowing students to be immersed in the learning process in hands-on real project with real brief and real deadlines. In my opinion, the most special thing is that hyper facilitates the students with endless possibilities to explore how far they can go; with the support from like-minded people who are willing to take risks and go the extra length to create something original. It is also worth mentioning that failing at hyperisland is ok. Failure is an organic process in a project; and hyper could acts as a buffer should a project goes unexpected. In their defense, the students said that they have never encounter anything like a failed project where the students have nothing to present. To me, it is an ideal learning environment.

Don’t expect to have a teacher, or to read academic books, or being told what to do, or to submit assignments, etc. This is not your ordinary school. You’ll learn by doing, and you will be left frustrated in the process. Guaranteed.

Having tasted a slice of hyperisland’s awesome learning environment, i must say that i’m intrigued. It might not be this year, it might not be next year either, but i’m looking forward to work with those awesomely creative students.

Alhamdulillah, adzan boleh berkumandang di Swedia:

Alhamdulillah pemerintah Swedia mengabulkan permohonan warga muslim untuk mengumandangkan adzan dengan pengeras suara, meskipun hanya di masjid Fittja, Stockholm, pun itu untuk panggilan shalat Jum’at saja.

Ketika masih di Indonesia, tidak jarang saya menunda-nunda shalat walaupun suara adzan memanggil dari mesjid terdekat. Namun disini, tak pernah lagi saya mendengar adzan berkumandang diluar masjid. Rasanya terharu sekali jika mendengar panggilan shalat disini meski hanya dari handphone…

Maafkan hambamu ini yang tak jarang melalaikan seruan-Mu ya Allah…

Dulu, ketika pertamakali beli kulkas, kakak saya pernah bilang kalau salju itu seperti sekumpulan embun es yang hinggap disekitar freezer. Kalau diperhatikan baik-baik, mereka terlihat seperti kumpulan es serut yang terbentuk dari uap air didalam kulkas.

Tp sekarang saya bisa katakan kalau deskripsi kakak saya itu kurang tepat.

Butiran-butiran salju turun dengan anggunnya dari langit dibawa angin yang bertiup. Satu demi satu turun menyelimuti tanah yang dingin, sambil saling memeluk satu sama lain. Seperti selimut yang halus, ringan, empuk, dan berkilauan ditimpa cahaya. Mengajak kita bermain bersama dinginnya udara.

Subhanallah sekali :)

My name is Ela. I am seventeen years old. I am not Muslim, but my friend told me about her friend being discriminated against for wearing a hijab. So I decided to see the discrimination firsthand to get a better understanding of what Muslim women go through.

My friend and I pinned scarves around our heads, and then we went to the mall. Normally, vendors try to get us to buy things and ask us to sample a snack. Clerks usually ask us if we need help, tell us about sales, and smile at us. Not today. People, including vendors, clerks, and other shoppers, wouldn’t look at us. They didn’t talk to us. They acted like we didn’t exist. They didn’t want to be caught staring at us, so they didn’t look at all.

And then, in one store, a girl (who looked about four years old) asked her mom if my friend and I were terrorists. She wasn’t trying to be mean or anything. I don’t even think she could have grasped the idea of prejudice. However, her mother’s response is one I can never forgive or forget. The mother hushed her child, glared at me, and then took her daughter by the hand and led her out of the store.

All that because I put a scarf on my head. Just like that, a mother taught her little girl that being Muslim was evil. It didn’t matter that I was a nice person. All that mattered was that I looked different. That little girl may grow up and teach her children the same thing.

This experiment gave me a huge wakeup call. It lasted for only a few hours, so I can’t even begin to imagine how much prejudice Muslim girls go through every day. It reminded me of something that many people know but rarely remember: the women in hijabs are people, just like all those women out there who aren’t Muslim.

People of Tumblr, please help me spread this message. Treat Muslims, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Pagans, Taoists, etc., exactly the way you want to be treated, regardless of what they’re wearing or not wearing, no exceptions. Reblog this. Tell your friends. I don’t know that the world will ever totally wipe out prejudice, but we can try, one blog at a time.

it’s not very often that an app could blow your mind. to me, Airdroid (for android) is a magical, brilliant, useful app which bravely challenge the position of KIES (samsung’s default app to manage android device). it’s like having a magic wand to control your phone :)

a must have app for android users.
